An image projecting apparatus is provided to reduce degradation of contrast caused as external light is made incident. An image projecting unit(2) projects image light(11). A reflective screen(3) illuminates an image by reflecting the image light projected by the image projecting unit. A light blocking filter(4) restricts transmission of external light(M) toward the reflective screen. The light blocking filter covers a screen face(3a) of the reflective screen and is disposed at a position out of a range of an optical path of image light directing from the image projecting unit to the reflective screen. A light receiving sensor(6) is provided near the light blocking filter in order to detect external light proceeding toward the reflective screen from the light blocking filter. Transmittance characteristics of the light blocking filter are changed according to a detection output of the light receiving sensor.
