PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low cost light-emitting device, an image reader and an image forming apparatus, which uniform an irradiation distribution on an irradiation area with a simple configuration, and satisfactorily read an irradiated body. SOLUTION: The light emitting device 50 includes: a light emitting diode 43 that emits light to a fixed irradiation area E of a contact glass 15, thereby illuminating a document P present on the contact glass 15 through the contact glass 15; and a circuit board 51 holding the light emitting diode 43 in a holding position. In the light emitting device 50, the circuit board 51 is disposed between the light emitting diode 43 and contact glass 15. In addition, the light emitting diode 43 is disposed in the holding position separated from the irradiation area E side end 51a of the circuit board 51 in the direction opposite to the irradiation area E. Thus, a light shield section 51b is formed on the circuit board 51 so as to extend toward the irradiation area E from the holding position of the light emitting diode 43. COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT
