PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an emitter for a fluorescent lamp which reduces emitter loss/consumption, when a discharge lamp is kept turned on. SOLUTION: The emitter for a fluorescent lamp contains a magnesium oxide component, wherein the magnesium oxide is such that its primary particles are formed of a single-crystal material and the average particle size of the single-crystal material is 1μm or smaller. Furthermore, the single-crystal material of the magnesium oxide has a cubic single-crystal structure which is generated through the vapor phase oxidation reaction of vapor with oxygen of the magnesium oxide.
