PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data storage device efficiently performing the copy operation of a magnetic tape and a data storage method. SOLUTION: The storage device is characterized in that a control means performs control to select valid data from among data stored in a first storage medium, to copy the valid data to a second storage medium, and to copy any data which have not been copied to the second storage medium among the valid data to a third medium. It is possible to shorten a copy time, and to effectively use the resources of the storage medium. Also, the storage medium is configured as a magnetic tape. When the end of the second medium is detected during the copy of the data to the second medium, the data is identified as the data which has not been copied to the second recoding medium, so that the data can be automatically copied to a third storage medium.
