PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a base isolation structure which positively generates liquefaction of the ground, and protects a structure from settling and tilting at the time of an earthquake. SOLUTION: In implementation of the base isolation structure, an RC continuous wall 22 which encloses a building 14 on soft ground 12A and reaches hard ground 16, and overhanging members 20 bearing a peripheral portion of a bottom surface of the building 14, are provided. When an earthquake occurs, hydraulic pressure in the soft ground 12A enclosed by the RC continuous wall 22 is increased to generate liquefaction. In the liquefied soft ground 12A, a total buoyancy F acts on the building 14 and the overhanging members 20, and therefore the building 14 is prevented from settling. Further the buoyancy acting on the overhanging portions 20 is almost uniformly applied to the peripheral portion of the bottom surface of the building 14, and therefore the building 14 is prevented from tilting. Furthermore the soft ground 12A is enclosed by the RC continuous wall 22 and the hard ground 16, and therefore the liquefaction can be positively generated, which positively prevents horizontal movement caused by the earthquake from being transmitted to the building 14.
