PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an in vitro evaluation method for the sensitizing property of a sparingly water-soluble substance and a method for the evaluation of a sparingly water-soluble substance to activate or suppress the sensitizing substance. SOLUTION: The method for the in vitro evaluation of the sensitizing property of a sparingly water-soluble substance comprises the exposure of a human monocyte cell in a medium with the sparing water-soluble test substance by the permeation of the test substance to a temperature-sensitive gelatinous hydrogel medium. The invention further provides a method for judging whether a sparingly water-soluble test substance is an activation agent or a suppressing agent to a sparingly water-soluble sensitizing substance by applying the sparingly water-soluble sensitizing specimen together with the sparingly water-soluble test substance to a temperature-sensitive hydrogel medium to expose the human monocyte cell in the medium by the permeation of these substances into the temperature-sensitive gelatinous hydrogel medium.
