The method involves classifying values of a channel impulse response or a filtered channel impulse response as noise or signal contributions, respectively, in dependence of a level of the values of the channel impulse response or filtered channel impulse response. A noise-reduced channel impulse response is calculated based on the channel impulse response using the classification of the values of the channel impulse response or filtered channel impulse response, respectively. A noise-reduced channel transfer function is calculated based on the noise-reduced channel impulse response. An independent claim is also included for a channel estimator for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signal, comprising a noise analyzer.
