The method involves providing actual traffic situations (uSD, BD) while determining an acceleration reference value and/or a deceleration reference value to obtain a given speed (vsoll) and/or a given distance (dsoll) of a motor vehicle that is driven in front. The actual traffic situation is provided such that a traffic probability value (WK-s) is determined from data for determining the actual traffic situation. The acceleration reference value and/or the deceleration reference value are determined when the probability value exceed a threshold value that is lesser than the probability value.
