The mechanism has a toothed rack (3) including a toothed rack section (3a). A rotor (10) of an electric motor (8) is arranged on a drive shaft (11). A ball screw (4) transforms a rotating movement of the rotor into an axial movement of the rack. The screw is in drive connection with another toothed rack section (3b). An elastic connection unit (16) is arranged between the rotor and the latter section. The connection unit forms a part of a coupling over which the rotor and a ball nut (6) of the screw are fixedly connected in a movable manner relative to each other in an axial direction.
