A channel control method for an IPTV(Internet Protocol TV) service and an apparatus therefor are provided to improve the service use convenience of a user considerably by collecting and analyzing preference through day-classified program viewing history information and pre-reservation information of the users in an IPTV service network, writing a preference program profile, and automatically connecting to a preference program on the basis of the preference program profile according to a connection day and time zone when the user logs in the service. When a channel change is requested according to a preference channel mode, an IPTV service control unit(120) searches only preference programs according to a time zone classified preference order and selects a channel. When a channel change is requested according to a basic channel mode, the IPTV service control unit successively searches all channels, selects a channel, and configures multicast forwarding information. An IPTV application server unit(130) transmits a channel-classified stream for providing an IPTV service. An IPTV transmission network unit(110) processes a channel-classified branching according to the multicast forwarding information.
