A self-extinguishing thermoplastic polyurethane used as a cable coating material, and its preparation method are provided to obtain very satisfactory mechanical properties and extrusion quality without using a halogen-based flame retardant. A self-extinguishing thermoplastic polyurethane comprises at least one incorporable organic phosphine oxide as a flame retardant; at least one a melamine derivative; optionally additional flame retardant; and optionally additives and/or auxiliary components. Preferably the organic phosphine oxide is represented by the formula 1, wherein R1 is H, a C1-C12 branched or linear alkyl group, a C6-C20 substituted or unsubstituted aryl group, a C6-C30 substituted or unsubstituted aralkyl group or a C6-C30 substituted or unsubstituted alkaryl group; and R2 and R3 are identical or different each other and are a C1-C24 branched or linear alkylene group or a C6-C20 substituted or unsubstituted alkarylene group.
