A flat display device and a method of driving the same are provided to resolve structural limitation due to the various representation of gray scales by reducing or maintaining the size of driver while displaying various gray scales. A flat display device includes a controller(120), a driver(130), and a display unit(140). The controller includes a processing unit(122), which divides a digital signal corresponding to a frame into plural digital sub-frame signals. The driver receives the digital sub-frame signals from the controller, generates plural analog sub-frame signals, and supplies the generated analog sub-frame signals to the display unit. The display unit displays images by receiving the analog sub-frame signals. A brightness average corresponding to the plural digital sub-frame signals is identical with the brightness of the digital signal before the division. The number of bits of the digital sub-frame signals is smaller than that of the digital signal.
