An apparatus and a method for estimating noise in a communication system are provided to improve decoding performance by estimating the noise accurately. A channel estimator(513) estimates channels to receiving signal vectors received from a plurality of cells. A noise estimator(515) estimates noise by considering the receiving signal vectors, the number of cells, the number of pilot sub-carriers used for estimating the channels, and pilot patterns used in the cells. The channel estimator estimates the channels by considering the receiving signal vectors and the pilot patterns used in the cells. The channel estimator estimates the channels according to a mathematical expression.
