A plasma display apparatus and a driving method thereof are provided to prevent flickers by setting a recess period before a sub-field having the same weighted value as a sub-field including a main reset period. A plasma display apparatus includes a plasma display panel(100), a controller(200), and drivers(300,400,500). The plasma display panel includes plural discharge cells. The controller determines gray scales displayed in a frame through image signals from outside, divides a frame into plural sub-fields having respective weighted values, and generates sub-field data for indicating sub-fields to be turned on discharge cells. The drivers apply driving voltages to the discharge cells according to control signals from the controller. The controller sets reset periods of first and second sub-fields among plural sub-fields divided from first and second frames for displaying first and second gray scales, respectively, as a main reset period. Recess periods are set before a third sub-field of the first frame and a fourth sub-field of the second frame.
