The lightweight structure of the invention comprises at least one support element (11) for constituting a carrier assembly for a flexible protective element such as a tent fabric. This support element (11) is formed by a set of substantially cylindrical individual parts (20) interconnected by a flexible link (30) which can have a first untensioned state for folding the support element (11) and a second tensioned state for stiffening this support element. These two states can be obtained by means of a tensioning member (50) for the flexible link (30) that comprises at least one winding drum (52) for this flexible link (30) that is driven to rotate by a crank (58). The winding drum (52) comprises a toothed ring (56) in engagement with a pinion (57) of the driving device formed by the crank (58).
