A display device includes: a display panel (100a) having a plurality of pixels arranged in a matrix; an illumination device (50) having a light source (30) and a waveguide (31) for emitting light forward; and a plurality of light collecting elements (54a) arranged between the display panel and the illumination device. The directivity of light emitted from the illumination device and coming into the light collecting elements varies in a display panel plane. Among the lights emitted from the illumination device and coming into the light collecting elements, the light which has passed through the light collecting elements and then the display panel before being used for display has a polar angle based on the display panel plane normal acquired according to the geometrical optics in a range of plus and minus ? or below. When the light flux having the polar angle within a range of plus and minus ? (within angle AOC) is F?, the region corresponding to the display region on the display panel surface is divided into nine identical regions. The minimum value of the light flux F? at the center of the respective nine regions is 70% of the maximum value or above.
