The method involves opening a Ballard skin (14), and moving a tool i.e. cutting and lifting tool (30), through a part of the skin. The skin is peeled off from a slot, and the tool is moved with a defined depth of penetration through the skin. A tool holder (26) or a tool guide is brought in locating contact with a surface (34) of the skin, where the tool is moved along the tool holder or the tool guide in a predetermined movement path through the skin. An independent claim is also included for a device for opening a Ballard skin on a gravure printing cylinder.
