The present invention provides methods of treating inflammatory bowel dis ease comprising administering to a subject in which remission has not been a chieved after a first treatment of about 4-8 weeks of 5-ASA (mesalamine or 5 -ASA), a further daily dose greater than about 4 g of 5-ASA in controlled re lease form to achieve a favorable response to treatment.
