PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for controlling the film thickness of a coated outer surface of a pipe in which the troublesome control operation (the step of changing) such as change of a nozzle tip or change of an amount of discharge is not required and a beautiful coating finish can be obtained without lowering coating adhesive efficiency in the course of changing the coating film thickness in a coating outer surface of a pipe. SOLUTION: When the thickness of a coating film is reduced by x% in the coating outer surface of the pipe forming the coating film by spraying a coating onto the outer surface of the pipe, the coating film is formed the thickness of which is reduced by x% only by diluting the coating before spraying to 100/(100-x) times with a solvent having volatile or evaporating properties without decreasing the amount of the coating discharged which is sprayed on the outer surface of the pipe.
