A method of providing an emergency alert (29) to a wireless area network terminal, comprises sending an unsolicited broadcast (4) from a network (1) to all wireless area network terminals (5, 6, 7) in a predetermined category. The unsolicited broadcast includes an indicator (12) that an emergency alert is waiting. The indicator triggers a request (9) to be sent from the terminal to the network to allow the alert to be downloaded (10) to the terminal.
