<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic monitoring method for a digital protection relay capable of reducing a delay in monitoring, reducing the storage capacity of failure information data and effectively utilizing the data. <P>SOLUTION: In this automatic monitoring method for a digital protection relay, the digital protection relay is monitored, an emergency alarm is outputted when a failure occurs, the emergency alarm output is reset when the failure is eliminated, and the failure information data including several data for each failure event is stored. A monitoring processing module monitors the occurrence of or the recovery from failure for each event, increases or decreases the count value of the failure counter of every mode distinguished by a failure mode when the failure occurs or is eliminated, and determines whether to output the emergency alarm or not by the contents of every failure counter.
