PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a CCD image pickup device for simplifying the preparation of an index image, and for attaining high-speed operation of imaging processing and its driving method, and to provide a film scanner to which such a technology is applied. SOLUTION: Transfer gate electrodes V1(TG1A) and V3(TG3A) of a photoelectric conversion element line for one line portion, which is the closest to a horizontal transfer CCD 36 or for adjacent two lines among a plurality of two-dimensionally arrayed photoelectric conversion elements 32, are configured so as to be discriminated from the other photoelectric conversion elements, and are controlled independently. This CCD image sensor 30 is loaded to a film scanner; and at image reading processing (index scanning) for acquiring an index image, the CCD image sensor 30 is made to function as a linear image sensor; and at imaging processing for acquiring an image whose image quality is high by each frame, the CCD image sensor 30 is made to function as an area image sensor.
