PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an absolute encoder capable of enlarging the distance measurement distance capable of measurement of an absolute position, without having to reduce the resolution. SOLUTION: An arithmetic section 50 calculates new absolute positional information, by using absolute positional information output from a first signal processing section 30 by using a first absolute pattern and absolute positional information output from a second signal processing section 130, by using a second absolute pattern having a period that is not an integral multiple of the period of the first absolute pattern. Thus, the length measurement distance can be extended by the number of combinations of respective pieces of absolute positional information, without having to lower the resolution.
