Provided is a composite joint (10) comprising a pair of composite panels (12) each defining a composite panel thickness and having an inner face sheet (18) and an outer face sheet (20) sandwiching a core panel (22) therebetween. The core panel (22) defines a constant thickness portion (28) and a ramp portion (26) along which the core panel (22) tapers to a reduced thickness portion (30). The outer face sheet is thickened in the area of the reduced thickness portion. The core panel includes a plurality of cells (24) extending between the inner and outer face sheets (18,20). The cells within the reduced thickness portions are filled with a filler material. The cells within the ramp portions and constant thickness portions are filled with aerogel. A primary splice plate (32) extends across the reduced thickness portions. Mechanical fasteners (36) extend through the outer face sheet and into the primary (32) and secondary (34) splice plates. A themal barrier compound (56) covers the primary splice plate.
