There is provided a container (1) for receiving items, the container (1) comprising a door (2) permitting access to the container interior, locking means (6) for locking the door (2), a transparent portion (3) allowing a user to view the interior of the container (1), and means for generating a random code when the door is locked. Where the container is to be used as a delivery box, the random code is preferably a proof-of-delivery code. Means may be provided to transfer the code to a user, which may be a visual, readable display, a bar code, or may be a radio, infra-red or sound signal. The transferring means may be active for a pre-determined time, and may comprise re-transfer means. The code may additionally comprise values selected from the container serial number, a date or time stamp, and it may be encrypted. The lock may be mechanical, or comprise a keypad, infra-red or radio receiver, a magnetic card reader or a sound receiver. Additional means may be provided to activate the lock. A memory may be provided to store the code and delete the code once the door is unlocked. |
