A method for detecting malfunctioning of a fuel pump is provided to monitor the operation of a fuel pump in a simple manner, and to inform a malfunctioning condition of users promptly when the fuel pump is in an abnormal state. A method for detecting malfunctioning of a fuel pump in a controller linked to the fuel pump that conveys fuel supplied from a liquid fuel storing container to a fuel cell for generating electric energy through electrochemical reactions between the fuel and an oxidant, comprises: a step(S10) of measuring the initial fuel amount and the concentration of the fuel stored in the container; a step(S12) of selecting a driving voltage and wave pattern based on the fuel concentration; a step(S14) of measuring the residual amount of fuel remaining in the container after a predetermined period; a step(S16) of calculating the amount of fuel conveyed to the fuel cell through the fuel pump based on the driving voltage, wave pattern and period; a step(S18) of comparing the conveyed fuel amount with the difference between the initial fuel amount and the residual fuel amount, and determining whether the result is in an error range or not; a step(S20) of measuring the voltage applied to the pump from the controller, if the result is away from the error range, and a step(S22) of comparing the measured voltage with the predetermined driving voltage; and a step(S24) of outputting information about the malfunctioning of the fuel pump, if the measured voltage approaches the driving voltage. |
