A method and a system for providing real-time traffic information are provided to enable a driver to receive real-time traffic information using a vehicle terminal by transmitting traffic state information around the vehicle to a server using the vehicle terminal. Vehicle terminals(211~241) picture images including traffic states in real time and transmit the pictured images with time and position information. A traffic information providing server(100) receives the real-time traffic information including traffic state images and time and position information from the vehicle terminals, sorts the traffic information in respective areas and times, and stores the sorted information in a database. The traffic information providing server provides the traffic information to a terminal which requests the real-time traffic information. The traffic information providing server includes a first data transceiver, a first memory, a terminal ID number memory, and a first controller.
