An air conditioner and a control method thereof are provided to determine whether to carry out cleaning of an indoor heat exchanger by using any one of a timer and a humidity sensor, thereby sensing optimum cleaning condition for the indoor heat exchanger. An air conditioner includes a timer(15) for accumulating operation time of cooling or dehumidifying operation, and a control part(18) determining whether to carry out cleaning operation for an indoor heat exchanger(2) according to the accumulation result of the timer after the cooling or dehumidifying operation is finished. As the cleaning operation condition is determined, the control part controls to the cleaning mode for cleaning the indoor heat exchanger by heating the heat exchanger. A humidity sensor measures humidity of the indoor heat exchanger and the control part determines whether to carry out the cleaning mode according to the measured humidity.
