The method involves determining a control parameter by considering a state quantity such as pressure or temperature, during filling of a combustion chamber (14) of an internal combustion engine (10). The state quantity is determined using the actual composition of allowed or determined gas mixture in the combustion chamber. A modification of an adiabatic state from a continuous final state is allowed for determining the state quantity. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a computer program comprising a set of instructions for performing an internal combustion engine controlling method (2) an electric memorizing unit for a regulation and controlling device (3) a device for regulating and controlling an internal combustion engine.
