A 6-speed power train of an automatic transmission is provided to reduce the whole size and weight of a planet gear set by reducing the number of friction elements installed on the planet gear set. An input shaft(10) receives driving power from an engine. A simple planet gear set is comprised of a first planet gear set(PG-1). The first planet gear set has a first ring gear(R1) connected to the input shaft, a first carrier(C1) having a first pinion(P1), and a first sun gear(S1) fixed on a transmission case(30). A compound planet gear set is comprised of a second planet gear set(PG-2) and a third planet gear set(PG-3). The second planet gear set has a second sun gear(S2) variably connected to the first carrier, a second carrier(C2) having a second pinion(P2), and a second ring gear(R2) connected to an output shaft(20). The third planet gear set has a third sun gear(S3) variably connected to the first carrier, a third carrier(C3) having a third pinion(P3), and a third ring gear(R3). The second sun gear and the third ring gear are connected to each other to be variably connected to the input shaft through the first planet gear set. The second carrier and the third carrier are connected to each other to be variably connected to the input shaft. A clutch unit includes a first clutch(C-1), a second clutch(C-2), and a third clutch(C-3). The first clutch connects to the first carrier, the second sun gear, and the third ring gear, variably. The second clutch connects the first carrier to the third sun gear, variably. The third clutch connects to the input shaft, the second carrier, and the third sun gear, variably. The clutch unit selectively applies the driving power from the input shaft to operation elements of the first, second, and third planet gear sets. A brake unit has a first brake unit(B-1) and a second brake unit(B-2). The first brake unit variably confines the second sun gear and the third ring gear to the transmission case. The second brake variably confines the second carrier and the third carrier to the transmission case. The brake unit selectively confines revolution with respect to the operational elements of the first, second, and third planet gear sets to the transmission case.
