PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for registering a defective area in a recording medium which does not have a dedicated alternate area. SOLUTION: The method manages recording data at a recording position of file management information without separating the alternate area from a data recording area in advance by properly moving data to a different area within the recording area when the defective area is detected, and registers the defective area in a Space Bitmap as a recorded area while recording the address of the defective area in a management information area or an unused area of a file system to register and manage the defective area.
