A bill handling device is provided to decrease a size of the bill handling device by using a downstream transfer path behind a bill discriminator as a discrimination standby transfer path. A bill input/output unit(20) includes a bill ejector and a bill stacker. A bill discriminator(30) discriminates inserted bills. A temporary container(40) temporarily stacks and stores the bills. A bill container receives and re-separates the bills. First transfer paths(51a,51b) transfer the bills between a lower portion of the bill ejector and a front portion of the bill discriminator. Second transfer paths(52,53,54) transfer the bills between a rear surface of the bill discriminator and the temporary container. A first branch unit initially distributes the bills from a rear portion of the bill discriminator to the second transfer path. The temporary container is arranged behind the bill input/output unit. The bill discriminator is arranged behind the temporary container. The first branch unit is arranged on a rear portion of the temporary container.
