The device has a conveying system (24) for conducting an object i.e. painted vehicle bodywork, through an inlet sluice region (14), a drying tunnel (18) and an outlet sluice region (16). A displacement piston (32) is provided, where a position and/or shape of a surface of the displacement piston are changeable in the drying tunnel in such a manner that a surface area of the normal atmosphere is displaced from the drying tunnel. A space, which is exempted from the normal atmosphere, is freed for filling with inert gas (12) after the further changing of the position and/or shape of the surface.
