A filter and a flat panel display device are provided to prevent a diffused reflection on a panel surface by laminating a polarization film having a reflective layer on the display panel. A polarization film(200) which polarizes an external beam, is formed on or in front of a flat type display panel portion. The polarization film includes a linear polarization layer(201), a lambda/4 phase difference layer(202), and a reflective layer(203). The linear polarization layer linearly polarizes the external beam. The lambda/4 phase difference layer circularly polarizes the external beam which passes through the linear polarization layer. The reflective layer inverts a propagation direction of the external beam, which passes through the lambda/4 phase difference layer. The reflective layer contains metallic components, such as aluminum or copper.
