PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for reducing glycerin that permits acquisition of reduced compounds of glycerin comprising 1,2-propanediol, 1,3-propanediol, 1-propanol and 2-propanol by reducing glycerin with a high selectivity, and a catalyst used for the method for reducing glycerin. SOLUTION: The method for reducing glycerin comprises reducing glycerin in the co-presence of glycerin, hydrogen and an SiO<SB>2</SB>carrier supporting Rh. In the method, further co-presence of one or two or more metal elements selected from among Mo, Re and W enhances selectivity and the like of the reduced compounds of glycerin.
