A method of operating a transit time acoustic flowmeter 14 includes determining transit time by taking into consideration the transducer time delay. The flow velocity determined by the acoustic flowmeter is corrected based on temperature. The velocity may be corrected using a correction factor which is a polynomial of temperature. The polynomial may be a first order polynomial. Also disclosed is a method of calibrating an acoustic flowmeter which involves estimating a path length and transducer time delay which can be used during operation of the flowmeter in the calculation of the fluid velocity. The path length and transducer time delay are estimated from a set of raw transit time data generated when a fluid flows through the flowmeter at a set of different fluid temperatures. The flowmeter may be used to measure flowing exhaust gas velocity. |
