The invention relates to a method for storing generational or incremental backup data, e.g. forming safesets, obtained using a fixed delta position reduction method. Backup data is initially stored in a primary or 'active' pool that comprises a 'seed' and one or more generations of data, e.g. with each generation including one or more data blocks that have changed with reference to a previous backup that included the seed. Over time, the size of the primary pool may get large. The size of the primary pool may be reduced by transferring data from the primary pool to one or more secondary pools. Generation of a secondary pool and/or data transfer may occur according to a policy, e.g. when a predetermined date is met, a predetermined time has passed since generation of the primary pool, or when a maximum number of generations is stored. The secondary pool may be stored separately thereby archiving older data to another, cheaper storage medium. |
