摘要 #CMT# #/CMT# Production of a structured surface on a substrate (I) involves (a) structuring (I) and (b) partially smoothing the structuring by a sol-gel coating process to give a diffuse scattering surface. #CMT# : #/CMT# An independent claim is included for the structured surfaced substrate obtained by the process. #CMT#USE : #/CMT# (I) is specifically a glass, ceramic, metal or plastics substrate (all claimed). The use of the structured surfaced substrates is claimed as diffusors and/or reflectors in optically applications, especially in liquid crystal displays. Other possible optical applications are in cameras, projectors or magnifiers (e.g. microscopes). Typically the structured surfaced substrates are used as reflective backgrounds for liquid crystal displays, to provide background illumination and reduce the energy consumption of the display. #CMT#ADVANTAGE : #/CMT# Structured surfaces with a wide range of applications as diffuse scattering surfaces are obtained by a simple, easily controlled two-stage procedure. #CMT#CERAMICS AND GLASS : #/CMT# Preferred Process: Structuring is carried out using particle beams (specifically sand jets or electron beams), laser beams, etching procedures or embossing procedures. The sol used in the sol-gel process is a sol of compound(s) of titanium, zirconium, aluminum and/or silicon. The structured surface is optionally additionally coated with a metal layer (especially a layer of aluminum, silver, chromium, nickel or another mirror-forming metal), specifically by wet chemical, chemical vapor deposition or physical vapor deposition methods. #CMT#EXAMPLE : #/CMT# A glass plate (1 mm thick) was structured using a jet of glass pearls (size 10-50 mu m), projected from a distance of 200 mm under a pressure of 2 bars. After removing dust, the plate was immersed three times in aqueous alcoholic silica sol (3 wt. % solids) at a withdrawal rate of 4 mm per second, with intermediate drying stages for 10 minutes at room temperature. After final drying an aluminum coating layer (70 nm thick) was applied. A structured surface with diffuse scattering properties was obtained.
