<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a catalyst for cleaning an exhaust gas which can burn a PM of a diesel engine exhaust gas at a low temperature and reduces the deterioration by heat generation during the PM burning (i.e. has high heat resistance). <P>SOLUTION: The composite oxide for a catalyst for cleaning an exhaust gas is composed of Ce, Bi, R and oxygen, and when assuming that the mole ratio of Ce, Bi, R is Ce:Bi:R=(1-x-y):x:y, it satisfies 0<x≤0.4 and 0<y<1.0. This composite oxide has an X-ray diffraction peak that corresponds to the fluorite type structure. In the composite oxide, it is exemplified that contains one or two kinds of Pr and Tb as the R.
