The device has an auxiliary burner (8) with fuel and combustion air inlets (13, 9), and a regulating device (18) to regulate a fuel/ combustion air ratio of the burner such that a specific air ratio of the burner is maintained to be constant. A evaluating /control unit (19) computes a minimum amount of air by a measured value and a combustion air flow, where a heat value and/or a wobbe index are determined from the minimum amount of air by correlation, and a signal is conveyed for adjusting an actuator (5) in a fuel line (3) and/or an actuator (7) in a combustion air line (4). An independent claim is also included for a method for adjusting, controlling or regulating a fuel/combustion air ratio to operate a burner.
