A method and an apparatus for managing mobility of an MS(Mobile Station) in a mobile communication system are provided to solve a problem that in order to avoid execution of cell selection, a serving cell should provide information of every neighbor cell to a mobile station, which is not always possible if there are too many neighbor cells or because a bandwidth for transmitting neighbor list information is limited. When a serving cell is changed, an MS(20) receives a neighbor list from a new serving cell and stores it in a neighbor list(NL-NW). When cell selection is executed(ST2), the MS relates the new serving cell(C3) to the previous serving cell(C2) and stores the same in the neighbor list(NL-A). In detecting quality degradation of the current serving cell, the MS measures quality of cells on the neighbor list(NL-NW) and every related cell on the neighbor list(NL-A). If a cell better than the current serving cell is detected, the MS re-selects the better cell as a new serving cell. |
