A method and apparatus for requesting a connection on a channel, in a wireless communication system is described. A PreferredChannelRequest message comprising an (8) bit MessageID field, an (8) bit TransactionID field wherein the TransactionID field indicates a value that is incremented for each new ConnectionRequest message sent, an 8 bit PreferredChannelCount field wherein the PreferredChannelCount field indicates the number of occurrences of the PreferredChannel field, and a PreferredChannel field having a length dependent on a ChannelRecord type, wherein the PreferredChannel field indicates the ChannelRecord specification for a channel on which Traffic Channel is preferred to be assigned is generated. The Preferred Channel Request message is transmitted over an OFDM Communication link.
