A method and an apparatus for scanning a channel in a digital broadcasting receiver are provided to omit repetition of search time related to the same frequency band with a previously searched broadcasting channel. A process for scanning the first broadcasting type channel at an arbitrary frequency band is performed. When the broadcasting type channel signal is detected at the frequency band(S12), a process for moving the frequency band(S15) and scanning the first broadcasting type channel is performed. When the first broadcasting type channel signal is not detected at the frequency band, the second broadcasting type channel is scanned at the same frequency band. The channel information related to the first and second broadcasting type channels is stored. The channel scan process is performed at the frequency band adjacent to the initial frequency band.
