<p>A method and an apparatus for scanning neighbor base station signals in a broadband wireless communication system are provided to shorten service interruption time due to scanning by eliminating an unnecessary scanning operation as a base station determines an FA(Frequency Allocation) channel a mobile terminal will scan. A base station periodically broadcasts a MOB_NBR_ADV message, which contains neighbor base station information, to a mobile terminal(601). The mobile terminal requests scanning interval time by transmitting a MOB_SCN_REQ message to the base station in order to determine a suitable base station for handover(603). Based on the MOB_SCN_REQ message, the base station transmits a MOB_SCN_FREQ_REQ message to an upper entity in order to obtain the FA state information of neighbor base stations(605). The upper entity creates a MOB_SCN_FREQ_RSP message containing the FA state information of neighbor base stations and transmits it to the base station(607). Based on the MOB_SCN_FREQ_RSP message, the base station creates a MOB_SCN_RSP message containing information about a necessary FA and information about a scan start point and transmits it to the mobile terminal(609). Receiving the MOB_SCN_RSP message, the mobile terminal executes scanning for the FA at the scan start point(630).</p> |
