The device has a rapier (44) defining a direction, and including an end with a removable coupling unit e.g. clip. The unit removably couples the rapier with a spool, and a removable maintaining unit e.g. clip, of a sheath (46) removably maintains the spool, such that the spool is maintained by the sheath or at the end of the rapier. The spool contains a weft thread winding (38) forming picks. An independent claim is also included for a method of inserting a pick.
