<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cathode active material capable of achieving a nonaqueous electrolyte secondary battery having both characteristics of high thermal stability and security as well as a high charge/discharge volume. <P>SOLUTION: A slurry obtained by mixing water and powder made of lithium metal composite oxide has water solution containing cobalt salt added while being stirred at pH9.0 or more, to which, particulates made of a cobalt compound are attached, which is then put under thermal treatment at 300°C to 700°C, whereby, the cobalt compound is made into lithium cobalt system composite oxide. Lithium metal composite oxide is represented in a general formula: Li<SB>z</SB>Ni<SB>1-x-y</SB>Co<SB>x</SB>M<SB>y</SB>O<SB>2</SB>(provided, M is at least an element selected from Mn, V, Mg, Mo, Nb, Ti, and Al, 0.10≤x≤0.21, 0≤y≤0.08, 0.97≤z≤1.10), and the number of atoms of cobalt is from 0.5 to 1.5 atom% to the total of atoms of Ni, Co and M contained in powder made of the lithium metal composite oxide. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2008,JPO&INPIT |
