PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To accurately detect the movement of an object, by distinguishing between an escalator and the object being an inspection object. SOLUTION: This escalator monitoring device is provided with a background acquiring part 400, an object extracting part 402 and a detecting part 404. The background acquiring part 400 stores a pickup image 411 between one step period as a background image 413 from a plurality of pickup images 411 of continuously imaging the escalator in idle operation. In monitoring, the object extracting part 402 selects the acquired pickup images 411 and the background image 413 of setting the escalator in the same arrangement, as a specific background image from a plurality of background images 413 included in a background image 412, and generates an object image 415 from a difference image between the specific background image and the pickup image 411.
