PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer which enhances printing quality by positioning a thermal head in the conveyance direction of a printing medium, and prevents an excessive load from being applied to a motor for driving a platen roller. SOLUTION: The positioning of the thermal head 31 in the conveyance direction of a rolled sheet 3A is carried out. When the rolled sheet 3A is in the discharge direction, a heating element of the thermal head 31 is brought into contact with the platen roller 26 to enhance the printing quality. When the rolled sheet 3A is in the returning direction, the thermal head 31 is brought into contact with the platen roller 26 at the inside from the edge in the discharge direction of the rolled sheet 3A, thereby preventing the excessive load from being applied to the motor for driving the platen roller 26.
