New azo dyes with a 2-oxoalkyl ester unit attached to the chromophore, used for dyeing and printing hydrophobic materials, e.g. for digital textile printing by the ink-jet process

Azo dyes with a 2-oxoalkyl ester unit attached to the chromophore are new (except for six specified compounds). Dyes of formula (I) are new (not including compounds formulae (a)-(f)). D = residue of a diazo component; R 1> = H, 1-6C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, OH, halogen, -NHCO(1-6C alkyl), -NHCOAryl, -NHSO 2(1-6C alkyl) or -NHSO 2Aryl; R 2> = H, 1-6C alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy or halogen; R 3> = H, optionally substituted 1-6C alkyl, 2-4C alkenyl or substituted 3-4C alkenyl, or R 2> and R 3> together may form the group -C*H(CH 3)CH 2C(CH 3) 2- in which C* is attached to the benzene ring; R 4>, R 6>, R 7> = H or 1-6C alkyl; R 5> = optionally substituted 1-6C alkyl; n = 0, 1, 2 or 3. Independent claims are included for: (1) a method for the production of (I) by diazotising compounds of formula D-NH 2 (III) and coupling them with compounds of formula (IV); and (2) ink containing (I) for digital textile printing by the ink-jet process.
