REFRIGERATOR AND THE CONTROLLING METHOD THEREOF

A refrigerator and a control method thereof are provided to recovery refrigerant according to the stroke of a compressor in a load detecting section of the refrigerator, thereby reducing the mode conversion frequency and stroke change of the compressor due to the mode conversion to improve the operation reliability and efficiency of the compressor. A method for controlling a refrigerator includes the steps of closing refrigerant paths of freezer and refrigerator compartments and driving a compressor for detecting loads(S110), and recovering refrigerant from the paths(S120). As the refrigerant recovery is finished, maximum stroke of the compressor is detected after opening the path of the refrigerator compartment(S130). The detected maximum stroke is compared with a preset cooling capacity of the refrigerator compartment to operate an evaporator of the refrigerator compartment by a stroke of the compressor corresponding to the cooling capacity of the refrigerator compartment(S140). The maximum stroke is compared with a preset cooling capacity of the freezer compartment to operate an evaporator of the freezer compartment by a stroke of the compressor corresponding to the cooling capacity of the freezer compartment after closing the path of the refrigerator compartment and opening that of the freezer compartment(S150). If the temperature sensed in the freezer compartment by a temperature sensor is lower than the preset temperature thereof, the paths are closed and the compressor is stopped operating to finish cooling operation(S160).
